My goal in this piece was to do justice to both parts of the title: to create a piece that both had its own personality and made logical sense. This unfolded in two opposing ways: the arranging of "sing-songy" melodic fragments in a very controlled framework, as in the first movement, and the extending of controlled fragments into very free structures, as in the second movement. The third movement is all fun and games.
