I first encountered the poetry of the Austrian expressionist Georg Trakl (1887-1914) through his most famous work, Gródek. Serving as a medic in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I, Trakl was strongly impacted by the horrors of war, suffering from depression and ultimately committing suicide at the young age of 27. Like Gródek and Trakl’s work as a whole, Gesang des Abgeschiedenen features vivid imagery, a pastoral feel, and topics that include death and the divine. These aspects of the poem strongly resonate with my compositional interests and influences—influences which include the composers of the second Viennese school, to whom I pay tribute in this piece.

Gesang des Abgeschiedenen (Sebastian im Traum, 1915).
An Karl Borromäus Heinrich

Voll Harmonien ist der Flug der Vögel. Es haben die grünen Wälder
Am Abend sich zu stilleren Hütten versammelt;

Song of the Departed

Full of harmonies is the flight of birds. At evening the green woods
Have gathered themselves around the quieter huts;
The crystalline pastures of the deer.
Darkness soothes the plashing of the brook, the moist shadows

And the flowers of summer, which ring beautifully in the wind.
Already the brow of the reflective man turns to dusk.

And a small lamp, goodness, is shining in his heart
And the peace of the meal, for bread and wine are blessed
By the hands of God, and from dusky eyes
The brother looks silently at you, that he may rest from thorny wanderings.
O the dwelling in the soul-charged blue of the night.

Lovingly the silence in the room is clasped by the shadows of the elders, The purple torments, the lament of a great generation,
That is now passed on devoutly in a solitary grandchild.

For, shining ever more radiantly, from black minutes of madness
The patient one wakes on the petrified threshold
And is powerfully clasped by the cool blue and the gleaming decline of autumn,

The silent house and the legends of the forest,
Measure and law and the moonlit paths of the departed.
