Nightfall was premiered at Concept Lab, Vol. XII, in 2022. In composing this work, I was attracted to limited sets of musical materials. I was also strongly influenced by popular music, to an extent that does not usually occur in my music, although there are also quotations of concert music pieces. The work’s four movements constitute something between an ABCA' form and an ABCA'B' form, with the last movement ambiguously referencing both the first and second movements. The titles of the movements (“Elegiac Hymn;” “Memory Passing;” “The Struggle Within;” “Sleep, Dream”) give some hint as to the storyline, or process, implied. The final movement, “Sleep, Dream,” attempts to bring whatever closure may be possible.
