Two Times

This piece was inspired by meditations on the nature of time. In the first movement, the two hands play in their own separate spheres of space-time, but are entangled through a complex relationship; what happens in one world subtly affects the other, and vice versa. The second movement pictures space and time as a continuum, but resonances cut backwards and forwards in time across the movement, and into the first movement. This approach draws inspiration from the music of Josquin des Prez and other composers of the Renaissance, where pieces often have a first and a second part. The music is also influenced by the ways in which that music seems to both drift seamlessly toward the future and live in the present moment.
